Roof replacement is a big job. It’s loud, messy (in a controlled way), and full of movement on and around your home. So it’s no surprise that many homeowners ask: “Should I stay home during a roof replacement?” If you’ve got this question on your mind, you’re not alone — and we’re here to break it all down for you.
Can You Stay Home During a Roof Replacement?
Yes — you can stay home during a roof replacement. But should you?
It depends on your comfort level with noise, pets or kids in the home, and how much flexibility you have during the day. Roofing isn’t dangerous to you inside your house, but it’s definitely not a quiet or low-key process.
What to Expect If You Stay Home
Here’s what happens during the replacement process and how it might impact your day:
✅ Noise, and lots of it. Hammering, scraping, shingle removal — it’s all part of the job. If you work from home, have small kids or pets, or just enjoy peace and quiet, this might be a challenge.
✅ Vibrations and dust. Removing the old roof and installing new materials can cause slight vibrations in your home, especially if you have items hanging on walls. We recommend removing valuables or securing anything fragile before the crew begins.
✅ Limited access to the outside. The driveway, front yard, or backyard might be occupied with materials and equipment. Moving cars out in advance is a good idea.
✅ Communication with the crew. A quality roofing company (like Do It Right Roofing!) will always keep you updated and ensure clear communication throughout the job. But you’ll still want to have a way to contact the project lead if you’re home or stepping out.
Should You Leave Instead?
Some homeowners choose to stay elsewhere during the install — especially if:
-
You have babies, pets, or noise sensitivity
-
You work remotely and need to be on calls
-
You just prefer not to be around during construction
In that case, many of our clients either stay with a friend/family member for the day or run errands while the job is in progress. Most standard roof replacements only take 1–2 days, depending on the size and complexity of the roof.
Tips to Prepare Your Home
Here’s how to make sure your home is ready, whether you’re staying or going:
✔️ Move cars, patio furniture, and yard decorations
✔️ Remove wall decor in rooms directly below roofing work
✔️ Notify neighbors (especially if homes are close together)
✔️ Keep pets safely indoors or away from high-traffic areas
✔️ Let your roofing crew know how to reach you during the day
